xin chào… tôi tên là Diva Saraswati ^^. I had a great chance from my university to go abroad to do a teaching practicum program in Vietnam. This is my first time to go abroad, so that let me say thank you very much to my beloved University, who made my dream is no longer a dream. There were so many experiences during this program. I have new friends and learn about new culture here in Vietnam. I did a teaching practicum in Ho Chi Minh City Univeristy of Technology and Education (HCMUTE), Vietnam.

- General Information
- School Profile
Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education is the first university that focuses on training technical teachers. In the following liberation, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education has been developed with other schools. It has a maxim “to have good workers, good teachers are needed” to show that HCMUTE is organized, arranged, and creating the Technical Education system.
This university was found on October 5th, 1962. Firstly, UTE is the Technical Education College Department, which located on Phu Tho School of Technology. Now it becomes HCMC University of Technology. This campus was built by U. S sponsors on an area of 10 ha in Thu Duc. Technical Education College Department was built in 1962. This department offered four major training. Those are Applied Sciences, Profession (Automobile, Electricity, Machine Manufacturing, etc), Graphic Arts, Commerce, and Home Economics.
In 1972, the department moved to Thu Duc and renamed into Nguyen Truong to Technical Education College Center of Thu Duc. It is focused on training middle school teachers. In January of 1974, Thu Duc University Institute of Technology was found. After that, it was upgraded into Education University. In 1997, the University was renamed many times until in 2000 it has been HCMC University of Technology and Education after separated from the National University under the Ministry of Education and Training.
- Academic Facilities
There are some faculties in HCMUTE. Those are Mechanical Engineering, Vehicle and Energy Engineering, Chemical and Food Technology, Garment Technology and Fashion Design, Information Technology, High-Quality Training, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Graphic Arts and Media, Applied Sciences, Economics, Political Sciences, Foreign Languages, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Civil Engineering, Institute Technical education.
- Teaching System
In HCMUTE, there are some faculties with several department / major. The teaching and learning process in this university consists of 15 periods, which is started at 07.00 am until 8.40 pm on Monday to Saturday. There are 2 kinds of English lessons at this university. The first is General English and the second is ESP or English for Specific Purposes. ESP is more focuse on students needed based on their major.

- Teaching Method
The teaching method applied in HCMUTE is mostly using Teacher-Centered based learning. Sometimes, the lecturer can use Students-Centered if students are at the intermediate level. Moreover, there are some approaches used in the teaching and learning process. Those are Communicative Language Teaching, Task-Based Teaching, etc.
- Source of Learning
The class will use two books as a source of learning. The first book is Handbook for General English that contains the material including 4 skills of learning English, grammar, and vocabulary and some exercises. The second book is Handbook for ESP which contains many passages or it is focused more on reading, translating, and vocabulary. there are also exercises for students.

HCMUTE make lesson plan for every unit of the lesson or Handbook. So, a teacher should prepare a lesson plan for one unit before teaching. There are some important points should be considered in a lesson plan. Those are number of students, time allotment, date and time, learning objectives, anticipated problems, possible solutions, teaching approach, material, teaching aids, and teaching procedures.

There are 3 main teaching procedures used in HCMUTE. Those are opening section or Warm-Up Activity, Whilst activity, and Closure or Wrap – Up Activity. These activities are mostly similar to the teaching procedures in Indonesia.

The teaching practice overseas is so much interesting. I got many things during this program. I get new friends, knowing their culture, understanding students’ styles in learning, and the most important thing is I can try traditional food from Vietnam. This is a great chance to get a better job in the future.
- Suggestion for Future Batch
For the next batch of teaching practice abroad, please prepare everything before u go. It is a great chance to explore new knowledge. You might be surprised or get a culture shock because of the different conditions. Try to adapt and socialize with people and also the environment. There are always some obstacles during the program, and you have to be wise in making decisions. Be good with your team and partners, because you will always need them. Let it be, use your time with good memories. 1 month is not that long when you already enjoy your time. Good luck! There is only one chance for you, make sure you take it ^^
