Magandang umaga, Magandang hapon, Magandang gabi.
Hello, I am Dayu Windhari. It is my first time to go overseas. Guess where I going to go. Guess what I going to do. Guess who I going to meet. All here in this article.
I went to Philippines on August 19, 2019. I am a student from the physics education department in Ganesha University of Education who has the chance to be able to practice teaching at the University Science High School (USHS) through U to U program. I was stay in Philippines for 28 days. For the first time I think it is a quite long time. But, it is actually really short time. Anyway, I was enjoy my day here in Philippines, especially in Central Luzon State University.
Central Luzon State University (CLSU) is located in Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija, Philippines. CLSU was converted from Central Luzon Agricultural to Central Luzon State University in 1964. That’s the reason in CLSU there are so many agricultural major. Facilities in the campus is so good. Campus has rice field, green house, goat farm, tilapia pond, etc. CLSU also process their farm product into their own brand. They have Tilapia Ice Cream, ice cream from goat milk with various flavor, Campus environment is very comfortable with towering trees and clean air. The campus is also close to the city center. We can ride a Jeepney and Trycicle to be able to go to Munoz or San Jose.
CLSU has a laboratory school called DepEd CLSU Elementary Lab School for primary education and University Science High School for secondary education. And luckily I have a chance to be able to practice teaching at the USHS. For my teaching practice program, I was guided by a very professional teacher, Asst. Prof. John Paul E. Santos as a cooperating teacher. He is very friendly and professional. He always gives me suggestion to be more confident and able to become a professional teacher.
- School Profile
University Science High School (USHS) located inside the campus of Central Luzon State University (CLSU), in Scince City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija, Philippines.
The History
University Science High School was established by virtue of the CLSU Board of Regents under board Resolution No. 1622 dated june 14, 1976 as a prime school for students who are inclined to pursue scince and technology courses. In 1978, Board Resolution No. 1780 was passed, revising the curriculum and changing the name of Agricultural Science High School. Further revision of the curriculum was made in 1979 to strengthen the agricultural components and meet the needs of the students who seek admission to agricultural institutions of higher learning without prejudice to the original goal of preparing the youth for intensive training in science and technology.
In 1983, the school was back to its original name, the University Science High School, to respond to the school’ intensive emphasis in science and technology. Now in its more than 4 decades of existence, though a small unit in the University under the College of Education, the USHS has been an asset and will always be an asset continuously giving its share in making CLSU a bold name in the academic world where science and technology front the line in its educational thrust by producing quality graduates.
The Vision

Personal Information
USHS is lead by their Principal, Dr. Mercedita M. Reyes has and has 18 faculties or teachers and 7 staffs. They are working together in supporting the needs for school and for students to be able to complete each other. There are 439 students in all grades; from grade seven until grade twelve. Here is the list of classroom and the number of students per level :
Junior High School : 320 students
Senior High School : 119 students
Total Population : 439 students
Teaching System
The school is held for 5 days and it starts at 07.30 and ends at 17.00. Teaching system in this school, teachers have teach in one hour for one section. Teachers can use books, PowerPoint, handouts, and do a demonstration with various learning models according to the topic being studied. The teachers usually used English and Tagalog while teaching. Every grade has different subject. Here is the list of subject each grade:
Measurement and Evaluation System
This school has different measurement and evaluation system with another school in my country, Indonesia. Learners from Grades 1 to 12 are graded on Written Work, Performance Tasks, and Quarterly Assessment every quarter. Written Work, Performance Tasks, and Quarterly Assessment every quarter are given specific percentage weights that vary according to the nature of the learning area.
Curriculum
All school in Philippines including University Science High School used K to 12 Curriculum. The ultimate goal of learning in this curriculum is to enable the learners to apply critical thinking skills and problem solving in daily life situations in order to improve their lives, as well as the quality of life of the people, the community and the country as a whole. The objectives, competencies and skills on critical thinking are sequenced in such a way that the learners will experience success in learning. The sequencing helps the learners to move from easy to difficult by increasing the degree of complexity as the literacy level increases and as learning progresses. It follows a logical and sequential order: from simple to complex, concrete to abstract, familiar to unfamiliar, specific to general, narrow to broad.
Teaching Plan (of My Major)
However, the teachers in CLSU Science High School make their own Lesson Plan (semi-detailed lesson plan) but still parallel to the National curriculum following the guidelines of the Department of Education. It contains student activity and teacher activity. All of these elements are presented in the following parts:
- Preparation:
- Routinary Activity: Greetings, praying, monitoring of class attendance.
- Review
- Motivation
- Lesson Proper: Student aand teacher activity
- Application.
- Generalization.
- Evaluation.
2. Pedagogical Content
Teaching Method
Each teacher has a different teaching strategy and method. Therefore the lesson plans made by each teacher are different. However, overall learning activities tend to be the same. In the lesson plan there are 5 main parts, they are:
- Preparation, which includes routine activities such as: Greetings, praying together led by the president class, and monitoring of class attendance. Then review about the previous learning. In the review activities, the teacher also discusses student’s misconceptions in previous learning. Then continued with motivation activities. In motivation, students are directed to connect learning that has been discussed with learning that will be discussed through real phenomena and situations that students usually see in their daily life.
- Lesson Proper: In the core activities, the teacher will choose a method that is suitable for the topic to be discussed. Teachers usually use PPT, learning videos, or demonstrations which students usually see to get student’s attention and develop their knowledge.
- Application. In this activity Students are directed to relate the topic with the situations they usually see in their daily life. In this activity students are also try to explain their opinion about the positive and negative impacts of the concepts being discussed.
- Generalization. In this activity the students were review the discussion. This activity aims to determine student understanding and confirm the material that has been learned so that all students have the same understanding.
- Evaluation. In this activity students are try answer some questions from the topic that has been discussed. So the teacher can know the understanding of each student and can be a reference when reviewing for the next meeting.
Learning Materials and Innovations
For learning activities, the teacher uses a variety of methods that fit the topic to be discussed. The teacher usually directs students to discuss with the socratic method. So that the class becomes more active because the whole class is invited to be a speaker. In other hand, for some topics the teacher and students also hold a demonstration together. In demonstration activities, students look more excited. This is because during the demonstration students are directly involved with the situation relevant to the topic being discussed in a fun atmosphere.
Source of Learning and Technology
The teacher uses various sources and technology in learning activities. Beside books, teachers also use PPT that displays videos and illustrations that are relevant to the topic being discussed. So, the student are more easily understand the topic being discussed.
Authentic Assessment
The base of authentic assessment is about evaluating the student’s ability to apply their knowledge. Students will be evaluated in the form of assignments or homework assignments. This evaluation process will be generalized at the respective class level. The students will be evaluated at the end of their class or at the end of their topics by answering quiz or test.
3. Teaching Plan
All school in Philippines including University Science High School used K to 12 Curriculum. The ultimate goal of learning in this curriculum is to enable the learners to apply critical thinking skills and problem solving in daily life situations. This is the conceptual framework and syllabus of K to 12 for grade 8 in general scince in page 125.

This is the first time I have make a lesson plan in a semi-detailed format. The lesson plan must be interesting and in related with the topics discussed. And I most difficult is to using an appropriate grammar. In my opinion this is quite challenging because English is not my mother tongue or my second languages. In the Philippines, I only made 3 lesson plans with different topics, they are:
- Momentum and impulse.
- Friction.
- Work.
This is one of the lesson plans that I put together with the guidance of the cooperative teacher (Asst. Prof. John Paul E. Santos):

4. Teaching Practice:
Procedure of Teaching
In USHS, learning activity has 5 main parts, they are:
- Preparation, which includes routine activities such as: Greetings, praying together led by the president class, and monitoring of class attendance. Then review about the previous learning.
- Lesson Proper: In the core activities, the teacher will choose a method that is suitable for the topic to be discussed. Teachers use PPT, learning videos, and mini games which students usually see to get student’s attention and develop their knowledge.
Time Management and Organizing Activities
For General Science in grade 8, they has 1 section in a day (from Monday until Friday) for 8-Researchers and 8-Inventors. I have 1 hour to practice in the class for one section. Because time is very limited, in generalization, teacher only asks a few questions to review the results of the class discussion. In addition, evaluation is also made as simple as possible so that students can answer according to their understanding in a relatively short time.
Problem Solving
There are some problem when I was practice. I was afraid because the class are so big. In Indonesia, I usually went to observation in the class with 20-30 students. But 8-Researcher have 39 students and 9-Inventors have 40 students. After my first demonstration, my cooperative teacher give me some suggestion, because my voice is so smooth. I really glad that Sir John Paul give me some suggestion how to manage the class and tell about their behavior in the class. So, I planned a new lesson plan and be able to be better than before.
Classroom Management
I have to practice in 2 section. One section in 8-Reserchers and one section in 8-Inventors. When I was observed, I thought the 8-Inventors was more active than 8-Researchers. But after I practice, I think they have similar characteristics. So I teach the same method. In my opinion they are unique. But, their responses to the learning that I designed tend to be the same.
5. Summary and Suggestions
Purpose of the teaching practice
The purpose of this program is to open up new perspectives on how to manage classroom learning from different cultures and situations and prepare professional teachers at the national and international levels, especially ASEAN.
Results of Practice
Through this program I can improve my English skills. I also became more confident with the help of friends and USHS teachers, especially my cooperative teachers who always motivated me to be more confident.
The experience that really impressed me was when I had to manage a class with quite a lot of members. This is the most recent and most challenging experience. Because I have to teach in English with confidence in front of 39-40 students.
Challenges of the Practice
My biggest challenge during the program was the fear of facing so many people in the class. But I still try to be able to manage so many students during the learning process. In addition, practice in English during the class is also a challenge. Because English is not the main language or mother tongue in Indonesia.
Overall Impression
The practice of teaching abroad with a different atmosphere and language is an interesting and challenging program. For me, by joining this program I can gain experience and new friends who open my mind to the outside world. I learned a lot from people I met in the Philippines, like friends who live together at RSTC, lecturers at the college of education, USHS teachers, and Filipino friends who also practice teaching at USHS.
Suggestion for Future Improvement
