MABUHAY PHILIPPINES!!
Hello everyone, my name is Ni Putu Dila Mahesta Putri, one of the practice teachers, people always call me Dila/Dilan. In the Philippines, Dila means tongue. I was born in Bali, a beautiful island with its own culture. Now, my majority is mathematics and I’m studying at Ganesha University of Education. My hobby is solving the problem of mathematics, traveling and doing some challenging activity. The activity that I do in the Philippines is teaching practice (U to U program) for one month. I went to the Philippines with my friend: Galuh, Dayu, Marcel and Nine. We arrived in the Philippines on September 20, 2019. I was delighted to know that I already stood in a different country. I always take some pictures because there are many beautiful views in the Philippines.
I was so happy, excited, but nervous and sad the first time I departed to the Philippines. It was such a new experience for me. I haven’t gone anywhere without my parents by my side. Yet, there I was, standing in another country where people speak a language I don’t know anything of. I only rely on using English. In the Philippines, I always hope it makes me learn more about diversity especially their languages, culture, and many more.
At Central Luzon State University :
I joined a student exchange program or U to U program (University to University) in the Philippines. In this student exchange activity, I got at Central Luzon State University. This journey was, at first, very interesting for me. Going to a new place in a noble goal: to teach. Central Luzon State University located in the Science City of Munoz, Nueva Ecija Province. Do you know? Central Luzon State University is one of the best universities in the Philippines and one of the premier institutions for agriculture in the Philippines. For practice teaching, I got a new experience to go to one of the Science High School at Central Luzon State University. I feel very happy to be able to join the program at this university. CLSU, a very beautiful and comfortable campus. Very friendly people make me happy to stay here for a month.

Academic Support System:
Facilities at university science high school are very adequate. Each classroom has air conditioners, fans, projector, other rooms have LCD TV and outside the room with CCTV cameras to improve school security and monitor student activities while in school. Besides, the school library is very convenient and provides a very good reference book. Not only that teachers all also provided equipment such as computers, printers, internet networks, and loudspeakers to facilitate and accelerate the performance of teachers in carrying out their duties.
Here is the list of classroom and the number of students per level:
- Junior High School: 320 students
- Senior High School: 119 students
- Total Population: 439 students
Teaching System
Teaching system in this school, teachers will be given one-hour teaching for one class per day. Teachers can use books, PowerPoint or handouts that can allow students to learn the material first before they arrive at school. Teachers will teach with various learning models according to the topic being studied. The school is held for 5 days and it starts at 07.30 and ends at 17.00. Every grade has a different subject.
Materials and Other Learning Sources:
For the materials, the teachers in CLSU Science High School that used English but still mixed with Tagalog Language. To provide a learning process in the classroom, teachers use course syllabus, internet (Book Online) and textbook, lecture notes/ handout, and PowerPoint presentations. My cooperating teacher (Ma’am Joanne) always gives a quiz before they are moved to the next topics.
Measurement and Evaluation System
This school has a different measurement and evaluation system with another school in my country, Indonesia. Learners from Grades 1 to 12 are graded on Written Work, Performance Tasks, and Quarterly Assessment every quarter. Written Work, Performance Tasks and Quarterly Assessment every quarter are given specific percentage weights that vary according to the nature of the learning area.
Curriculum
All of the schools in the Philippines use the curriculum from the government. It’s called K to 12 means education obligatory start from Kindergarten to 12th Grade. The Curriculum was implemented 4 years ago after the former President Benigno Aquino mandated this so that the Philippine schools will have the same number of years as the other South East Asian Countries. With that, the University Science High School used the same curriculum, two years now after its opening. This is to make sure that, students get to choose the right track for their future profession. The curriculum also would like to help those students, to make them work-ready after graduating from Senior High School.
Pedagogical Contents:
I got many new things during observations at USHS, starting from how to teach teachers to students, learning tools and other things. with a large number of students, the teacher can explain the material well.
Teaching method:
In preparing the learning process in class, a teacher must be able to prepare a learning device. Besides, the teacher also prepares various things related to the methods, strategies, and teaching techniques that are summarized in the lesson plan. A teacher is required to have their style in the learning process so that the classroom atmosphere does not become monotonous which can cause students to fail in receiving the material provided.
Learning materials and innovations:
To accelerate the learning process, a teacher is required to use various learning materials and apply various techniques and methods, according to the topic of ongoing learning. By using appropriate learning techniques and methods, students will more easily understand the lesson and its explanation. Innovation is an important point that must be upheld by every teacher because by providing innovations such as the formation of study groups, giving minigames related to the learning process will be able to increase student interest in following the learning process in class.
Learning and technology resources:
Nowadays, teachers make it easy to find interactive learning resources that can be obtained from the Internet or books that are easily found in libraries and elsewhere. In the 21st century today, teachers are also required to be able to use technology that can support the teaching process.
Authentic assessment:
At USHS, evaluations are usually given in the form of simple understanding questions related to the learning that has been taught. There are three criteria for assessment of mathematics lessons according to the Philippine Department of Education, namely tertiary employment (30%), performance assignments (50%), and quarterly assessments (20%).
Teaching Plan:
In the Philippines, the curriculum system for elementary to senior high schools is 10 years for compulsory education. In recent years, the program has been changed to K-12 around 2013 (the same as Indonesia, 12 years compulsory education). This is a document about K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum for the Alternative Learning System (Learning Strand 3 – Mathematical and Problem Solving Skills):

Mathematics subjects at University Science High School are taught in one hour or 60 minutes per meeting. Three main parts of the lesson such as introduction, main activities, and closing must be well planned. The teacher must be smart in planning lessons and activities in the classroom. The teacher must be able to read the situation in class because there will be many possibilities happening by students. sometimes, some students are bored or may show their bad behavior and the teacher must be prepared to solve the problem.
In my first practice teaching, I am very nervous and afraid but my cooperating teacher always supports me. My class starts at 7.30 a.m. Ma’am Joanne accompany and observing me when I was teaching. First, I taught 9th grade in Examiners Class and Developers Class. I continue the next chapter, which is about the midsegment of a triangle. I use powerpoint and GeoGebra Apps as my learning media. I get satisfaction when I teach a concept in a way that my students may understand and show me how well they have learned. In class, I always try to use many strategies to reach school goals which making them understanding. It was a very extraordinary experience to be a good teacher.
Summary and Suggestion:
Practice Results:
It is a matter of pride for me because in this program I get a lot of new things about how to be a good teacher, how to manage classes, how to adapt to new environments, how to communicate with outsiders, and of course, become a more alert person.
Practice Challenges:
At first, I was feeling insecure and often nervous. that is my biggest challenge, how to fight that bad thing. my tutor always encourages me to stay focused, confident and enthusiastic.
Impressions and Messages:
I’m very happy to be able to participate in this program smoothly. Now, I want to invite my friends from each country in ASEAN to consider contributing to encouraging ASEAN cooperation through intercultural education context. Hence, in the future, we can rely on our young generation to establish the bridge to embrace diversity and collaborate to support the development of each country, economically, socially and in many other aspects. I feel I need to know and learn about education in this world. Thank you for the time, experience and unforgettable moment. I will always remember that. See you in the Philippines for my second expedition. Mamimiss ko kayo, Salamat Po.
