Kumusta sa lahat. I’ll tell you a story before it tells itself. This story is about my journey in Philippine. All this experience are starting when I came to the Philippines a month ago on August 20th, 2019. Let me introduce myself. You can call me Nine. At first, I don’t mind if it’s possible to do an overseas exchange program which is one of my dream of life this faster when I’m still young. My brother always said that there are some different experiences when you doing some job in the country abroad because we will have going out of our comfort zone. I admit he is true, because I feel it now.
Central Luzon State University Science High School, often shortened to University Science High School or USHS is located inside the campus of Central Luzon State University (CLSU), in Muñoz, Nueva Ecija, Philippines. USHS is not included in the Philippine Science High School System and is under the College of Education of Central Luzon State University. USHS is an university under the College of Education. There are 439 students in all grades; from grade seven until grade twelve. There are two units in this school i.e. Junior High and Senior High school. USHS is lead by their Principal, Dr. Mercedita M. Reyes. USHS has been an asset and will always be an asset continuously giving its share in making CLSU a bold name in the academic world where science and technology front the line in its educational thrusts by producing quality graduates.
Facilities at university science high school are very adequate. Each classroom has air conditioners, fans, projector, other rooms have LCD TV and outside the room with cctv cameras to improve school security and monitor student activities while in school. In addition the school library is very convenient and provides a very good reference book. Not only that teachers all also provided equipment such as computers, printers, internet networks and loudspeakers to facilitate and accelerate the performance of teachers in carrying out their duties.
Teaching system in this school, teachers will be given one hour teaching for one class per day. Teachers can use books, PowerPoint or handouts that can allow students to learn the material first before they arrive at school. Teachers will teach with various learning models according to the topic being studied. The school is held for 5 days and it starts at 07.30 and ends at 17.00. Every grade has different subject.
In USHS the teaching method that applies is direct teaching method, usually 5E and Problem Based Learning. This method is to apply in depend the classroom activities and pedagogical notes, and is integrated with innovative pedagogues.
For the materials, the teachers in CLSU Science High School that used English but still mixed with Tagalog Language. To provide learning process in the classroom, teacher use course syllabus, internet (Book Online) and textbook, lecture notes/ handout, and PowerPoint presentation. My cooperating teacher (Sir Marius) always give handout to the student at the end of the topic, so the student can learn more at the home because teacher will give a quiz before they are moved to the next topics.
This school has different measurement and evaluation system with another school in my country, Indonesia. Learners from Grades 7 to 12 are graded on Written Work, Performance Tasks, and Quarterly Assessment every quarter. Written Work, Performance Tasks, and Quarterly Assessment every quarter are given specific percentage weights that vary according to the nature of the learning area.
All of the schools in Philippines use the curriculum from the government. It’s called K to 12 means education obligatory start from Kindergarten to 12th Grade. The Curriculum was implemented 4 years ago, after the former President Benigno Aquino mandated this so that the Philippine schools will have the same number of years with the other South East Asian Countries. With that, the University Sciense High School used the same curriculum, two years now after its opening. This is to make sure that, students get to choose the right track for their future profession. The curriculum also would like to help those students, to make them work-ready after graduating from Senior High School.
In University Science High School the teacher make their own Lesson Plan but still parallel to the National curriculum following the guidelines of the Department of Education. This Lesson Plan is mapped and aligned to the Department of Education USHS Curriculum, designed to be highly usable for teachers. It contains classroom activities and pedagogical notes, and is integrated with innovative pedagogues.
The teaching procedure in USHS is similar to Indonesian Senior High School. After greeting, praying and checking for attendance there are review, motivation, lesson proper, generalization, evaluation and assignment.
For the first part of teaching, the teacher will review the previous lesson to mare student reminder about the previous lesson.
In this part of teaching, the teacher will gave some game or practice about the new lesson to make an opening of prior knowledge that student bring in their self.
This part is the core that teacher teach about the lesson where the matter that display by PowerPoint or Movie that will make student understand.
This part of teaching is the part that teacher asking again about what student know in the new lesson.
In this part of teaching, the teacher will give some problem to student that will solve by them to assessment by the teacher.
At this part of teaching is the part that teacher give student some problem assignment that they can solve as homework.
For the Physics lesson in USHS has 1 section with 30 minute and every meeting had 2 section. So for the teaching management because the Physics cannot understand just by watch student teaching will make 1 lesson plan can use to 2 meeting.
When I practice teaching the student, I found that they had already understand in English but for the Physics the hard to understand because teaching methods make that hard to them understand. So the teacher had problem solving to brings some fun game and practice that will ease the student to understand about Physics.

The purpose of teaching practice is to apply the knowledge gained in tertiary institutions, to be teach and to provide real teaching experience in other countries. And to understand that there are difference ways to think from the student and teacher in other country.
Outcomes that gained by overseas practice teaching are having international experience teaching, becoming Undiksha Ambassador in overseas practice teaching, etc.
The challenge when practice teaching are there only few time to prepaire lesson plan and material teaching because there are different common sense between the country. And also there are problem about the time teaching because teaching physics cannot be done by just one or two meeting only.
It would be an unforgotten experience to live in the Philippines because I have discovered the new me here. Thanks to all person that help and care for me when I stay here. But I have faith if we mate we will meet in the other chance and the other time. There aren’t word can tell about my 28 days story in the Philippines because some experience are inexplicable.
If there are the chance to get more experience and relation, why not?. Just give it a try and more effort to accomplished all the good vibe. If not now, when would we have the same chance?. Thank you.
