Hello everyone, my name is Ni Wayan Irena Karuni, but you can call me Wayan or Irena. Now, I’m studying at Ganesha University of Education (Undiksha) and majoring in Chemistry Education. I’m from Klungkung, Bali. I’m 21st years old, and I love chemistry. This is my journey when I was in Thailand for one month.
Well, we arrived in Ubon Ratchathani Province on 6th August 2019. That was a long trip from Bali to Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand. Before we landed in Ubon Ratchathani International Airport, we spent 2 hours in Kuala Lumpur, and one night in Bangkok. Ms. Kanjana and Ms. Jarinda picked up us at the airport and we had lunch together in Tesco Lotus. After we had lunch, we went to our dormitories, Malay Mansion, then we take a rest and prepare our self for the next day.
The next day, on 7th August 2019, we went to Ubon Ratchathani University (UBU) to joint a welcoming ceremony from UBU. On this special occasion, Assistant Professor Dr. Chalermchai Wongrak, Assistant to the President for International Relations and Education, presided the opening of the meeting and delivered a warm welcome speech. After that, Ms. Thaviny Shaipitisiri, English Consultant at the International Relations office, gave a general overview of UBU’s information and guided living in Ubon Ratchathani. After that, we had lunch together and continued with campus and city tour to learn more about UBU and Ubon Ratchathani. We saw the UBU campus life and the environment, it was a great and big campus. Then, we went to Thung Sri Mueang Park. Over there, we took pray and ask for good luck and protection while we live in Ubon. Afterward, we visited Wat Nong Bua to make merit and worship the statue of the Buddha. Before we returned to our dormitories, we explored shopping at Big C and Charoernsri Market. We went to our dormitories by Songtaew (small truck with 2 row-seats). It was a great experience to used traditional transportation.
On 8th August 2019, Mrs. Patcharin Jongjai and Ms. Kanjana Manomai took us to the school, Lukhamhan Warinchamrab School. Before we held a meeting with the headmaster and the staff, we joint the commemoration of the ASEAN Day in the hall with all the school members. After that, we met the headmaster and the staff to discuss the practice teaching programs. The headmaster, Mr. Nopparat Thongsang, was very humble and kind. Then, we split into four groups and went to our department. I was in the science department with four others, and the others they went to the mathematic department (3 people), computer department (2 people), and economic department (1 person). The coordinator of the science department, Mr. Mongkol Wilamat, took us to the science department office and met our tutor teacher. My tutor teacher was Ms. Rattana Rattanametana, she is a chemistry teacher and she was very humble to me. After I met my tutor teacher and science department staff, my tutor teacher took me to Tesco Lotus to got lunch together.
In the first week in Lukhamhan Warinchamrab School, we used to observe the physical condition, the environment and observed the learning system with our tutor teacher. In the second week, we used to observe the class and prepare the lesson plan with our tutor teacher. The third week we started to teach but still under supervision tutor teacher, and the last week, we teach alone and did the teacher practice test. Well, after observed the school, this is my report about Lukhamhan Warinchamrab School.
General Information and Academic Administration of Lukhamhan Warinchamrab School
Lukhamhan Warinchamrab School is the World Class Standard School in Ubon Ratchathani. This school is located at 37 Moo 11 Sathon Mak Road, Saen Suk Subdistrict, Warin Chamrap District, Ubon Ratchathani Province, Thailand. Lukhamhan Warinchamrab School was built on 10 June 1974 by the idea of Dr. Ko Sawatdi Panich, who at that time was the general director of the Department of Education. This school has a philosophy “Barriers can be solved with wisdom” and a motto “Knowing duties, discipline, attention, academics, focusing on quality work”. Based on the philosophy and motto, this school has a vision within the year 2019, Lukhamhan Warinchamrab School Providing education by using the school as a base and participating in teaching and learning according to international standards by professional teachers. With the DLIT information technology system to develop learners with moral knowledge Based on Thainess.
Lukhamhanwarinchamrab school had 6.499,4 m2 area with adequate facilities, it had 73 classrooms, 18 laboratories, 25 computer labs, a field, and sport facilities, traditional and modern music facilities, a guidance and counseling room, a school health unit, a students’ organizational room, a multi-purpose room, an administration room, 22 teachers’ rooms, and one hall. With those facilities, it made students were able to develop themselves not only in the education field but also in their hobby and skill. This school had 2946 students with six grade (Matthayom 1-6),
Lukhamhanwarinchamrab school is a combination of junior high school and senior high school. Each level of education was called Matthayom. There were 6 Matthayom in this school. Matthayom 1-3 for junior high school students, and matthayom 4-6 for senior high school students. The teaching process was started at 08.30 a.m – 04.00 p.m from Monday-Friday. But, from July-September every Tuesday the school was off because some students would join the military training. This school is very clean, green, and comfort. Further profile about the school can be read for more information about the school you can read it here http://www.lukhamhan.ac.th/
In chemistry subject, especially for matthayom 5, they had chemical reactions, chemical equations, and chemical equilibrium. For the measurement and evaluation system, same as in Indonesia, students’ achievements are measured and evaluated by daily assignment, unit test, midterm, and final test, and student paperwork. In every meeting, students are given a daily assignment and paperwork for every material that they have learned before. Unit test used to assess or measure students’ achievement on their daily assignment, midterm used to measure students’ achievement for a particular unit, and the final test used for measuring students achievements for all unit in the students’ coursebook.
I have observed 3 different teachers, first is my tutor teacher, P’Por, second is another chemistry teacher, P’Panda, and the last is astronomy teacher, P’Adam. Every teacher has a different teaching method. They used teacher center method, problem-based learning, and project-based learning. But, in general, mostly the teacher used teacher center method. It means the teacher will explain the matter used media as powerpoint, video, pictures, etc. more than the students.
The learning materials are quite the same as in Indonesia. In the second grade of high school (mattheyom 5) they learn about chemical reaction, chemical equation, and chemical equilibrium.
For the source of learning, the student used the textbook and paperwork that given by the teacher. Besides that, the source of learning also from the internet too, students were allowed to bring handphones and use it to search the materials.
For the assessment, the teachers always give the students a little test after learning one material, and also they use the paperwork for knowing how understood the student for each materials. If the students have any question, they can ask their teacher in the class or after class
The curriculum that used in Lukhamhanwarinchamrap School was already designed and adjusted to Thailand’s School system. As well as teaching activity in Indonesia, the teacher in Thailand also should prepare the lesson plan before teaching which will be used as guidance in teaching. But, the format of the lesson plan in Thailand and Indonesia is different. The lesson plan in Thailand was more simpler than the lesson plan in Indonesia. Because the teaching and learning activity is more flexible in the classroom, so that’s why the teacher is not too fixated by the description of the steps in the lesson plan. In addition, other things such as opening the lesson, giving materials, and closing lessons the same as well as in Indonesia in KTSP curriculum. I made my lesson plan with my tutor teacher, she guided me very well and also she teach me about the materials to make me more understand about the topic. This is my lesson plan, my media, and also my teaching schedule.
My Lesson Plan : Lesson Plan Draft
My Media : Day 1
My Teaching Schedule :
Opening (10 minutes)
In the opening part, i came to the class and automatically the students stand up and do the greeting “Good morning/afternoon Teacher”, then I ask about the presence and readiness of students to take part in learning. After that, i deliver the topic to be taught and give apperception to students related to the topic of chemical equilibrium.
Core Activities (80 minutes)
In this part, i was explaining the material about the introduction of chemical equilibrium, the constant of chemical equilibrium, Le Châtelier’s Principle, and Factors that affect equilibrium by using presentation slides. Then, i asks the students questions about what has been explained before. After that, i divide students into groups and gives practice sheets that have been prepared beforehand to discuss. I supervise and confused each group’s performance. Last, i asks the representatives of each group to explain the results of the discussion.
Closing (10 minutes)
At the end of the learning section, i confirms students’ understanding of what students have learned by asking a question, then i presents the learning topic for the next meeting. The learning was so give the students a test before I living, to make sure they understand what I teach.
ended by saying greetings.
In Lukhamhanwarinchamrap School for the chemistry subject, the students will get 2 meetings in a week. Each meeting is 50 minutes of study, especially for Friday is 40 minutes. In the first meeting, the teacher will give them a very detail explanation about the topic that the students are going to study, and the second meeting students will get worksheets or mini tests to know their understanding of the topic. When I do the teaching practice, I followed this step because I do not want to disturb the school’s role to teach in the classroom. I alProblem-solving
There were some problems that I found when I did the teaching practice at Lukhamhanwarinchamrap School. The first problem is the language when I teach them with the English language, some students still not understood what I said, the other, they understood, but can’t communicate with English. To solve this problem, I ask my tutor teacher to translate and also we use google translate. The other problems are, some topic, in chemistry is different, so I must learn more with my tutor teacher before I teach my student.
Summary and Suggestion
Purposes of practicum
Outcomes of practicum
The challenges of practicum
The main challenge in this teaching practice was language. Not all of the students, teachers, and other people understand English languange. This obstacle challenged me as a teacher to be able to guide students, make them undertsand the topic. the other challenges is the wheater, in Thailand the temprature is more hotter than Indonesia, i must prepare my self every day for the hot day.
Overall, this is a great and awsome experience that i never had. This program make me more understand about diversity, and give me the best experience of teaching. I also got new knowledge in term of cultures, foods, tourism objects, and others. By joining this program, I was able to learn a new language too, such as English and little bit Thai language. Last but not least, this program allowed me to have more new friends from other countries.
Suggestions for future improvement
For the next batch, they must learn about the local languange for make more easier to communicate with the people.
