Major : English Language Education
Home University: Ganesha University of Education
Receiving University: Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education (HCMUTE)
I am Chandra Ayuni as a student of English Language Education in UNDIKSHA. The first thing that I would like to say is my deepest gratitude to my beloved university, UNDIKSHA for having me in its greatest overseas teaching practicum. I never imagine myself will be selected as the student who will represent UNDIKSHA in another country through the teaching practicum. When the university told me that I will be placed in Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education, I directly pushed myself to know more about the university in case I have a slight knowledge about the university. Times flew so fast and burned so bright I flew far away from my hometown to seek more knowledge in the place that I have never been before. It’s hard to leave the place that I love the most but I also feel so excited to step on the land that will grow me into something by its experiences. At the first time I heard about Vietnam, I saw nothing except traffic jam but then it turned me into something that I never expect before about this place. Arrived in Ho Chi Minh in the evening made me feel so exhausted, I just want to find a bed where I can lay down my body, but I had to be patient first because the distance from the airport to the dorm took 30 minutes ride. When my team and I arrived in front of dorm, my head started echoing that this was amazing. The dorm looks very clean and peaceful, the coordinator led us to the foreign room, when the coordinator opened the door, it looks so clean and the facilities are so good. They provided us with AC, Fan, washing machine, hanger and trash bin which made us easier in doing something. On the next day my team and I had to meet Ms. Hang and our supervisor in the university, I thought I had to take a bus to go to the university but I was wrong, the university is behind the dorm and it’s really close. My first impression for this university is awesome. The environment were so clean and fresh, the people also so nice. One month being here is not enough for me because all the people treated me so nice and the most important thing is the way how I solved the problem in the class gave me a really meaningful experience. Having teaching practicum in HCMUTE was a challenging dream that I ever walked in. this university served me with its beautiful view, great facilities and great instructor. Every supervisor that we had, showed us the way and gave us the light which made us can pass this teaching practicum.

1. Teaching Method
This university used Teacher- Center in teaching rather than Students-center. This shown when the teacher get involved more than the students during teaching and learning process. Even using teacher center, the students in this university especially for non-majored English are passive because the lack of vocabulary and less confident to speak. To handle the situations the teacher used many media variation to make the students understand and engaged with the lesson. Commonly, the teacher used PPP method in their teaching and learning process.
2. Source of learning
HCMUTE students are given several sources of books that they’re going to learn. Commonly, teacher used two different books, one for English major called CLC ,the name of the book is “life” and another one is for the regular or non-major English students with book named “Four Corners”.
When I knew I got a chance to go abroad I felt so excited because I will have an opportunity to gain more knowledge in the place that I have never been before. I have to show my best and open my mind about everything that exist in this world will teach me many lesson in another form. I prepared everything that I need both physically and mentally. I did a lot of exercise to keep my body healty and review all the lesson that has been taught to make me more ready in teaching. Besides my own preparation, my university also provides a lot of things that I and every students need. The students who will go abroad doing their teaching practicum have to pass several requirements in order to make them more ready and show their best. When one of my lecturer said that the students who will be sent to HCMUTE, Vietnam will teach in the university not in the senior school or junior high school, I feel like I will face a lot of challenges and opportunities at the same time. I searched a lot about the university and students’ ability in English and the result is so amazing. This result makes me feel excited and also in doubt to teach them, I questioned my self about my capability in dealing with the teaching process, will it be run well when I can’t speak Vietnamese. I had to convince my self that I can do and I trust my self that it will be okay when I do it with a heart.
Second day in Vietnam, me and my friends were asked to meet our supervisor and what we have to do during our teaching practicum in HCMUTE. We got one supervisor for two students. Me and one of my friend got Ms. Le Thi Thanh Ha as our supervisor for one month in Ho Chi Minh City Univerity of Technology and Education. She explained all the things that we have to prepare before we teach like, we have to attend at least twenty observations in the class to make us familiar with the way the lecturer teach the students in this university and also as a guidance for us to make our own lesson plan. In doing the observation, I found so many things that I can observe, like the environment in the class, how the teacher control the class and how enthusiastic the students in the lesson. As what I have observed, teacher who teach English in the non English major has to put more effort in doing their jobs. The teacher have to think another plan in case the plan that they have madea not running well. The teacher also have to put much of their energy in organizing and managing the class, especially for the large class. Students have the difficulty in their speaking and listening skill because of many factors. Such as, lack of their confidence in speaking, afraid of making mistake and lack of the vocabulary. But those problems can be handled by using an appropriate technique by the teacher.
From those observation that I attended, I’ve got different lesson for each. I had my first observation in Mrs. Ngoc Thao class. The first impression of this class was beyond my expectation. I never seen and observed a large class like this before in my hometown and most of the students are men. This situation made me curious about how the teacher will control the class. When the class begun, the situation forced me to take a deep breath about how condusif it was. The students are really calm and follow the class very well. Unfortunetly, the students are not too active in giving their participation because they don’t have much confidence to speak. The teacher have to point out the students to answer the question and speak louder. The main point that I got from this observation is when no students want to participate or want to be a volunteer in the class, the teacher can ask the students to answer or participate by point out them directly. My second observation has showed me different way to teach English, the most important point that I saw from my second observation is how the teacher engaged with the students will show the best result or reach the goal of the learning. Teacher should make the situation or the environment of the class as comfort as possible to make the students feel enjoy during the lesson and acquire more about the lesson.
After doing the observation, I have to do my lesson plan in order to complete one requirement in my teaching practicum. I have to devide the materials with my partner in teaching, Desi. Before I used my lesson plan in real teaching I had to have a consultation first with my supervisor and revised it if it is needed. The first lesson plan that I have made got a lot of comment from my supervisor. I had to change it completely, the lesson plan here is different from my hometown. There’s a guidance to make the lesson plan and the step as well. The comment that I have got from my supervisor is that I have to elicit the material from the class and over yes or no question to make the students more understand and catch the meaning of the material. The lesson plan have to be more specific and not too general in order to make it eacy to be taught. I also have to put some picture which related to the material in order to make the students easier to find the meaning of the materials. Besides the lesson plan, I also have to prepare my PP Slides that I will use when I’m teaching in the class. The PP Slides should show the specific material tthat I will teach on the next Friday. The opportunity to make a lesson plan in other country gaves me so much experience and it open my mind about the learning process in the other country besides mine. The supervisor taught me lots of thing to improve my skill in designing the lesson plan and how to act in the large class for the first time. It’s really awesome and challenging experience for me that I could gain.
The lesson plan has been revised and approved. The next step that I should do is I had to practice more about my teaching skill for the Friday afternoon on 7-10 periods. I tried so hard to do and show my best in teaching. When the day came, I felt really nervous and anxious about the practice that I have done. I’m afraid that no one will understand my explaination as the nervousness that I had in front of the class, I also afraid that I will get failed when I applied the technique that I had to use. When I started to teach, I felt my body shaking and fortunately I could handle it. I had to stand in front of fifty students which only have more or less 6 girls. The feeling that I couldn’t describe mixed at the same time during my teaching process. Bit by bit I tried to focus on the goal and the steps that I should pass. The students can follow my instruction even there was some misunderstanding because I spoke to fast but at least they were active to answer the questions and prove they are smart students. I felt so glad that when the times goes by I can completely control my nervous system and engaged with the students eventhough there were several steps that I forgot and I couldn’t elicit the students answer very well. After doing my teaching practicum, my supervisor, Ms. Ha, will give me some advice and comment about my teaching that I have done. The comment was really motivated and made me more awake about how to teach, manage, and control the students at the same time. My supervisor also gave me a lot of good advice to improve and develop my teaching skill. She has showed me a light about the way I should behave in front of the class and how to get students attention when we’re teaching.
My second teaching practicum was held on the other next Friday, as usual I had to make my lesson plan and PP slides for my teaching practicum and did a consultation with my supervisor whether what I have made was right or still need to be revised. My supervisor gave me some recommendations to make the activity more fun and easy for the students to understand. I added a game to review the latest lesson. During the teaching process, I’ve got a problem which made me feel confuse and anxious at the same time. That problem was with the LCD or the TV which showed the power point, it suddenly couldn’t show the next of PP Slides and stuck with the previous slide. It took a long time to get repaired until I can’t use it. I had to continue my teaching practicum without using PP slides and made me felt that I’m loosing the key point when I’m teaching. When the teaching practice was over, I’ve got a comment about teaching and what have to be improved again. As what I’ve got, I still showed my nervous and little bit confuse in delivering the material. I also still cannot manage the time in teaching until I took many times to finish one part. My instruction also not clear enough for the studnets to catch the meaning. These comment opened my eyes that I still have something that should be improved.
During the teaching practicum that I’ve already passed, it showed me a lot of things that could improve everything in my self especially how to teach. This teaching practicum teach me how to manage the time, how to be patient and how to be a grateful person in every situation that I have faced. A great supervisor that I ever had always led me into a new knowledge for myself and taught me how to deal with the situation that I never faced before. A great students always remind me to get improve everytime and forced me to do my best. I really am categorized as one of lucky person that can get this great opportunity. These knowledge will be useful for my future and the memories will be held on to me until my last breath.
